Start With How Skin Actually Works

The skin you can see is dead. That sounds unkind but it is simply true: the outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is made of flattened cells that have finished their working life and are on their way off you.

The living part is underneath. New cells are born at the base of the epidermis, and they spend roughly four to six weeks travelling upward, changing as they go, before they arrive at the surface and flake away. That journey gets slower with age — it is closer to four weeks in your twenties and closer to six or more later on.

Step One: You Chew It

A chewed gummy begins breaking down in the mouth rather than waiting for the stomach. That is a small practical advantage of the format, and a much larger one is that people genuinely take it. Compliance is not a glamorous mechanism but it is the one that decides whether any supplement does anything at all.

Step Two: Absorption

Five of the six vitamins in Gelagen are B vitamins, and B vitamins are water soluble. They do not need fat to be absorbed and they are not stored in any quantity, which is why they are taken daily rather than occasionally.

Vitamin A is the exception. It is fat soluble, it is stored in the liver, and that difference is the reason it carries an upper limit that the B vitamins do not. That is covered properly on the vitamin A page.

Taking the gummies about thirty minutes before a meal, as the label suggests, puts them into a system that is about to be busy digesting.

Step Three: Nourish The Layer That Builds Skin

The vitamins travel to the living basal layer, where the next few weeks of your skin is being assembled. Three things happen there and each has a different nutrient behind it.

• Cells divide. Folate and vitamin B12 are both required for DNA synthesis. No new cell gets made without them.
• Structural proteins get built. Biotin works as a cofactor in the enzymes involved in fatty acid and amino acid handling, which is the raw material side of the job.
• Signals get regulated. Vitamin A influences how skin cells mature and differentiate as they rise.

Step Four: Support The Barrier

Between the flattened cells at the surface sits a lipid mortar. That mortar is what keeps water in and irritants out, and when it is not working properly skin feels tight after washing, stings when a product goes on, and looks dull because uneven surfaces scatter light rather than reflecting it.

Pantothenic acid supports the production of those lipids. Its derivative panthenol is used topically for the same reason, which is a rare case of the same ingredient having a job on both sides of the skin.

Step Five: Renewal Arrives At The Surface

Four to six weeks after you start, the cells reaching the surface of your face are ones that were built while you were taking the gummies. This is the first moment at which a comparison is fair, and it is the reason the routine page asks you to take a photo on day one.

Step Six: Why Twelve Weeks, Not Four

One cycle shows you whether anything is moving. Three cycles show you whether it is holding. Skin also has a great deal else going on — a bad month of sleep, a hot summer, a hormonal shift — and a single cycle is short enough for any of those to drown out a modest effect.

What Gelagen Does Not Do

• It does not replace sunscreen. Nothing swallowed protects skin from ultraviolet light, and sun exposure does more visible ageing than any other single factor.
• It does not treat acne, eczema, rosacea or any diagnosed condition.
• It does not add collagen to your skin, because it contains none.
• It does not work faster if you take four gummies. It works exactly the same and costs twice as much.
